Wild Walks #2 - Arrabida: The forest of solitude

On Sunday, 8th June, we set off on a botanical journey through the forested slopes of Mata Coberta, deep in the heart of the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park, a landscape renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity. The woodland paths we followed, once used to supply the nearby monastery, were frequented by monks and nuns in search of edible and medicinal plants. These trails connected a network of sacred spaces used for contemplation, such as caves and monastery towers that still line the route, bearing witness to the area’s spiritual past.

As we wandered through thickets of oaks and strawberry trees, we encountered some of the remarkable plant species that thrive in this ancient forest.
